Places to Visit in Munnar - Destination India
Situated in the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala, Munnar is a most preferable destination in Kerala, which is crowded with visitors all around the year. There are lots of places to be explored in Munnar.
Mattupetty located 13 km from Munnar is situated at a height of 1700 m. The main attraction of Mattupetty is the dam and the lake here. DTPC, Idukki provides boating facilities in the Mattupetty Dam. Mattupetty Indo Swiss Project is a highly specialized dairy farm, a cattle center and a research centre located 3 km away from Dam. It is a farm where over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared.
Eravikulam National Park is the first national park in kerala. It is located 13 km away from Munnar in Marayoor Route. Spread over 97 sq. km., this park holds the largest viable population of Nilgiri Tahr. Neelakurinji flowers is also a rare attraction becuase this flower blooms only in twelve years. Rajamala is the tourism zone of Eravikulam National Park and is a place where one can see Nilgiri Tahr.
Top Station 32 kms from Munnar town on the Munnar-Kodaikkanal road. The place falls on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. Here you can enjoy the panoramic view of Western Ghats and the valley of Theni district of Tamil Nadu. Top Station is the western entrance to the planned Palani Hills National Park.
Echo Point is an ideal destination for Munnar touring peoples. Echo Point, situated on the way to Top Station from Munnar is a stop over for tourists visiting Top Station - the highest point in Munnar and the rare Neelakurinji (Strobilanthus) blooms here. The important characteristic of the echo point is that the visitors can hear their voice echoing through the reservoir and coming back reverberated.
Kanthaloor is famous farm stays., and you can see natural farming of wide variety of crops which is not seen on the other parts of kerala, which includes varieties of Apple, Orange, Strawberry, Blackberry, Plums, Gooseberry, Egg fruits, peach & passion fruits..etc. Vegetables and spices like cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, beans, potato, and garlic grow here.
Marayur is the only place in Kerala that has natural sandalwood forests. The 93 km² Marayur reserve forest is believed to have about sixty thousand naturally grown sandalwood trees. Marayoor Sarkkara priced at 60 Rs per Kilo is known as best jaggery in India
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, (CWS), is located 18 km north of Marayoor in Kerala. The sanctuary plays host to the second largest population of highly endangered Grizzled Giant Squirrels in the world. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal location for forest trekking in Kerala. Trek paths most commonly used are the Chinnar – Chullipetty and Chinnar – Koottar. Ecotourism activities in Chinnar Forest includes River trekking - Chinnar and Pamber, Trekking to the cultural site(dolmens), Nature trail to the watch tower, Trek to Thoovanam falls etc. Camping overnight in tribal huts at Vasyappara gives opportunities to sight elephants, peacocks, langur, deer and the giant squirrel
