Hogenakkal is a hamlet situated in Tamil Nadu bordering Karnataka. The two Kannada words 'Hoge' means 'Smoke' and 'kal' means 'rocks' give meaning to the word Hogenakkal as Smoky Rocks.
Hogenakkal Falls is a waterfall on the river Kaveri. It is sometimes referred to as the "Niagara of India" and is located in the Dharmapuri district of the Tamil Nadu.
Boating in Coracles made of Bamboo is major attraction in Hogenakkal. The coracles are about 2.24 m (7 ft 4 in) in diameter, but still can take a load of eight persons at a time. The coracles are locally called parisal in Tamil and either teppa or harigolu in Kannada. And don’t be surprised when a boatman asks you for Rs. 250 to take you on a coracle ride. Heavy bargaining is recommended.

The best season to visit is soon after the monsoons, when the river is in full spate. The Hogenakkal falls was closed in monsoon season do to heavy discharge of water from the Kabini and Krishnaraja Sagar dams.
There are no good places to stay at Hogenakkal. We suggest to take room only for fresh, spend the day in Hogenakkal and stay night at Dharmapuri, 45 Km from Hogenakkal.
