Dal Lake Srinagar- Travelogue by Rogen Joseph
Affter arriving Batmaloo Mini Bus Stand in Srinagar i did not find any difficulty in finding a bus to Dal Lake from other side of road. I catch a private mini bus and reach dal gate with in 15 minutes.
Now i'm in Dal Lake in Srinagar district of Jammu & Kashmir state in India. Dal Lake is a major tourist attraction in Kashmir and is famous for Shikara Ride.
Now i'm sitting inside a Shikara in Dal Lake. A shikara is small paddled taxi boat, often about 15 feet (4.6 m) long) and made of wood with a canopy and a spade shaped bottom. It is the cultural symbol of Kashmir.
When i reach Dal Lake itself plenty of peoples approach me to take rooms in house boat. I take a room in houseboat name HOOD.
Staying house boat is coastlier in my state Kerala. But in case of Kashmir rooms in house boat are cheaper than rooms we take in outside hotels. Unlike the houseboats of Kerala, houseboats on the Dal Lake are usually stationary. Made of wood and with intricately carved wood paneling, the houseboats are of different sizes, some even have three bedrooms, living room and kitchen. All houseboats own a small shikara that take peoples staying there to otherside of dal lake any time.
Nicknamed 'the jewel in the crown of Kashmir', the tranquil lake is a charming way of viewing the surrounding mountains, gardens and orchards that line the shores. The Shankaracharya hill provides a very fine view over the lake. .
I plan to stay one more night in Dal Lake. So next day morning without checkout from house boat i proceed for visiting some other tourist destinations in srinagar including Nishanth and Shalimar Garden.
