Konark Sun Temple - Travelogue by Rogen Joseph
Affter completing my visits to Puri Beach and Jagannath Temple i catch a bus to Konark. Konark is situated 35 km away from puri and i reach destination with in an hour.
Now i am standing in front of Konark Sun Temple at Konark in Puri district of Odisha, India. Konark is situated 65 km away from Bhubaneswar, capital of Odisha. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and listed in Seven Wonders of India.
The eastern gateway which is the main entrance to the temple compound, is decorated with Gajasimha (Lion upon an elephant) images, with outward faces, installed on two high stone-benches on either side of the passage.
It is believed that the temple was built by king Narasimhadeva I of Eastern Ganga Dynasty in 1255 AD. The alignment of the Sun Temple is on the east-west direction. The name 'Konark derives from the combination of the Sanskrit words, Kona (corner or angle) and Ark (the sun), in reference to the temple which was dedicated to the Sun God Surya. Konark is also known as Konaditya.
We can also see two smaller ruined temples discovered nearby. One of them is called the Mayadevi Temple and is located southwest from the entrance of the main temple. It is presumed to have been dedicated to Mayadevi, one of the Sun god's wives. It has been dated to the late 11th century, earlier than the main temple. The other one belongs to some unknown Vaishnava deity.
And for my readers, The best time to visit Konark is from October to March. You can also visit Chandrabhaga Sea Beach located just 3 km away. Chandrabhaga Mela in February and Konark Dance Festival are major events in Konark.
