Meghamalai - Travelogue by Rogen Joseph
Meghamalai is a cool and misty mountain range situated in the Western Ghats in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. It is around 75 km away from Theni. Meghamalai is popularly called High Wavy Mountains.
Affter eating lunch from Theni we proceed to Chinnamanur located 23 km away in Theni - Kumily Route. From Chinnamanur we take a left diversion to Meghamala road.
There is a forest check post located 3 km away in this road. Vechicles are permited to enter only from 6 am to 6 pm. Forest guard check our bags in search for alcohol.
Roads to meghamala is not in a good condition. It takes around two hours for 52 km journey. Ensure that tyre of your vechicle is in good condition before climbing Meghamalai. As we do fill enough fuel from Theni or Chinamanoor itself as no petrol pumps are located en-route.
Journey through this route presents bird-eye view of cumbum valley. We also enjoy plenty of mountains in this forest route.
Tamilnadu government is planning to make Meghamalai Wildlife Scantuary as a major tourist destination.
Meghamalai houses plenty of wild animals including Elephants, Monkeys, Deer and Bison. It is also home for plenty of birds. Rare great Indian hornbills are found here. The sanctuary is also home to the endangered, arboreal grizzled giant squirrel Ratufa macrora.
When we reach closer to Meghamalai forest changed in to beautiful tea estates.
Meghamalai is mostly planted with tea, includes Cloudlands, Highwavys and Manalaar estates, the access to which is now largely restricted.
While we take some snaps from meghamalai Estates a transport bus passes in front of us. TNSTC bus takes passengers to Theni via Chinamannor. First bus to Meghamalai from Chinamannor is at 7:30 AM. Last bus to Chinamanoor from Meghamalai is at 6:30 Pm. Bus is less crowded.
Not much to get from internet if you are searching for meghamalai resort, meghamalai hotels, meghamalai estate bungalow or meghamalai homestay. Anyway few rooms available in Meghamalai. Rate is around 1000 Rs for four persons. We reccomend our readers to book earlier as accommodation is limited in Meghamalai.
We find a small shop (so called canteen) that provide Tea, Coffe and Food. A beverage shop (TASMAC) is also located closer to it. Eventhough none of us in our gang drink alcohol., i wonder if Meghamalai have a TASMAC shop then why forest officer check our bag for alcohol at entry time two hours ago?.
Few meters before Highwavys Dam there is a Police Outpost. Six Dams are there in Meghamalai. Tourist can go up to Manalaru Dam located 20 km away from Meghamalai. Affter that is Periyar Tiger reserve area in the boundary of kerala state
We did not find much tourists over there, its mainly because of inadequate travel facility and condition of the road. But Meghamalai offers an excellent view of cloud touching mountains and tea plantations. We plan to visit this destination once again.
Before it's getting darker we climb down hill and proceed to Kerala via Kumily.
