My Journey to Yelagiri Hills - Rogen Joseph
From Jolarpettai railway station itself i saw beauty of Yelagiri Hills. I walk out from the railwaystation. Jut two minutes walks takes me to Jolarpettai Bus Stop. Buses comming to and from Tirupattur to Vellore via Vaniyambadi ply frequently through this route. Direct buses are available to Yelagiri in every hour. But for my bad luck a bus gone short while ago. After enquiries at roadside shops, i understood that road diversion to Yelagiri is from a place called "Ponneri" whichi is located on Tirupattur - Vaniyambadi road. I catch next bus and reach Ponneri with in 5 minutes. Auto Riksha's takes peoples to Yelagiri at 50 Rs per Person. I wait for a bus and catch side seat.
Journey to Yelagiri from Ponneri is a wonderful experience. There are 14 hairpin bends on the ghat road.
When i reach 7th or 8th hairpin i saw a panoramic view that reminds me about seeing town few minutes before aeroplane landing. Road condition to Yelagiri is well but much care is needed if you are driving to this destination.
Yelagiri is at an altitude of 1400 metres above sea level. From Yelagiri Bus Stop (Punganoor) itself i see tourism sign boards. A small walk to left side takes to Punganoor lake. Nature park, is in the opposite direction from the lake's entrance. First i go to lake.
Boating is also available here.
Affter visiting Yelagiri only i understand that Yelagiri is not a place name. It is a name for hill ranges. Actual name of place on top of Yelagiri hills are Punganoor, Athanavoor, Mangalam, etc. Lotus pond on the way from Athanvur towards Mangalam is amazing. Trekking to Swami malai also begins from Mangalam village. Some buses from Yelagiri run upto Nilavoor. You can visit Mrugan Temple en-route. From Nilavoor a 5 km trekk will take to Jalagamparai Waterfalls. And for my readers if you are interested in scentific fields you can visit Indian Institute of Astro Physics located in Yelagiri.
Yelagiri is less developed in comparison with my journeys experience to other hill stations in Tamilnadu including Ooty in Nilgiri district, Kodaikanal in Dindigul district, Kolli hills in Nammakkal district and Yercaud in Salem district. But accomodation is at reasonable price. Big budget hotels are also available here. Some hotels conduct adventure activity in Yelagiri privately.
