Beating Retreat Border Ceremony - Attari Wagha Border
During my visit to Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar i heard some taxi people calling "Attari...Attari...Attari". They are taking people to India - Pakistan border. I refused there call and went back to my hotel. I enquire about possibility of reaching border by bus. It was around 3 pm i catch bus to Attari from Amritsar. 45 minutes journey takes me to Attari.
Now i'm in Attari , 32 km away from Amritsar in Punjab. All buses from Indian side only runs up to here. Amristar - Lahore highway is the only road connection between India & Pakistan.
Look at the sign board behind me. Lahore, one of the major city in Pakistan is just 23 km away from here.
We can reach the border between india and pakistan by 1 km walk through this highway. Border is rush on evening. Flag hosting ceremony jointly organize by soldiers of two rival nations take place here.
Visitors are permitted only up to here. If you have visa you can cross this gate and continue journey to Pakistan. We can see Entrance of Pakistan with pics of there father of nation.
If you are sitting on other side of this gate in Pakistan you can see this as entrance arch to India. People sit between this arch and gate to see Flag hosting ceremony
The ceremony starts before sunset (around 5.30 pm in India) with a fantastic parade by the soldiers from both the sides. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are folded and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again. It is called the beating retreat border ceremony. There is no ticket charge for watching this event.
If you are planning to visit wagha border try to reach atleast two hours earlier to avoid rush & sit near gate. Cell phones does not work in the area becuase of mobile jammers. Affter ceremony conclude i take few more snaps and walks back to Attari, where a public transport bus to Amritsar is waiting.
